LAYTON — A fire that burned two homes and a recreation vehicle in Layton caused about $1 million in damages Saturday, and a separate fire in North Salt Lake caused extensive damages to apartments and displaced five families.

The Layton Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly after 2 a.m. in west Layton. The fire began in an RV and then spread to two homes and two vehicles, causing "significant damage," fire officials said.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control after about 45 minutes, but not before it caused an estimated $1 million in damages. The RV was destroyed and the roofs of the homes suffered extensive damage.

The fire is not considered to be suspicious and no injuries were reported, but the cause was still under investigation Saturday, the department said.

The Layton firefighters were assisted by fire crews from Hill Air Force Base and the North Davis Fire Department.

The fire in North Salt Lake began about 3 p.m., destroying multiple apartments at 55 N. Center Street and displacing five families.

The fire extended into the attic of the apartment complex and other apartments suffered water damage, said South Davis Metro Fire Battalion Chief Mike Hansen.

There are no known injuries to residents or firefighters, Hansen said, but one cat died in the blaze. The Red Cross was assisting the five families.

Hanson did not have a damage estimate, but said the damage was extensive. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
