KAYSVILLE — A wildfire that sparked in the wetlands of Davis County on Friday afternoon grew to at least 300 acres, but slowed down after a thunderstorm dropped rain on the area.

The lightning-caused fire, named the Legacy Fire, was first reported just before 3 p.m., the Kaysville Fire Department said in a Facebook post. It is located in the wetlands west of Kaysville and Farmington near Farmington Bay.

Fire behavior lessened significantly after a thunderstorm with substantial rain moved through the area shortly before 9 p.m., state and local fire officials reported through Utah Fire Info. Crews are expected to monitor and patrol the fire overnight, and will reassess the size and containment of the fire on Saturday morning, officials said.

The blaze grew to at least 300 acres Friday, partially because the fire area was inaccessible for emergency crews, Utah Fire Info said. No property damage or injuries to firefighters or civilians have been reported, the fire department said.

Power was out for a time for an estimated 7,000 customers in parts of Davis County because the fire damaged power lines, officials said. Rocky Mountain Power's website showed around 9:25 p.m. only a handful of customers without power.

Earlier Friday afternoon, fire officials said there were some evacuations in place, but later clarified that the evacuation order was only for animals. As of 8:40 p.m, there are no evacuation orders in place. People in the area were asked to be prepared to leave in case further shifts in wind change the fire conditions, the fire department said.

A strong fire line is in place with the construction of the West Davis Corridor, officials said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect in Davis County until 3 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. The agency warned of winds of up to 60 miles per hour and possible hail.

Photos taken from the area showed thick black smoke rising from the flames earlier Friday. The evening rainstorm cleared out some of the smoke, authorities said.

With limited access to the area where the fire is located, the flames may continue to burn, fire officials said. Multiple agencies were on the scene, Utah Fire Info reported. As of 7:15 p.m., additional fire crews from Weber and Davis counties had been dispatched to the scene.

People are asked not to call police or 911 to report the fire. The Utah Highway Patrol also reminded people not to stop on the side of Legacy Parkway or I-15 in the area to take photos of the fire.
