ST. GEORGE — A wind-fueled fire that burned five houses and a field near the intersection of 300 West and Diagonal Street Police has been contained, said St. George police.

At about 3:50 p.m. multiple agencies, including city and electrical workers from St. George and police and fire crews were on scene attempting to contain the blaze which was "not under control" at the time, said St. George police spokesperson Tiffany Mitchell.

Police warned St. George residents to stay away from the intersection while they tried to contain the blaze.

The fire started inside a home or a shed and quickly moved to other houses and outbuildings due to the wind, according to Mitchell. Officials were worried that the fire could continue to spread with the wind and were attempting to contain it quickly. The fire was contained at about 7 p.m.

"I need you to stay away," Mitchell told residents on Facebook Live. "Please do not come down to this area and give us more reasons to worry."

Mitchell also asked residents to be careful while driving and reported multiple crashes as power outages have knocked out traffic signals in the area. Most of Diagonal Street was blocked off for "a couple blocks each way," Mitchell said.

The National Weather Service reported that St. George had experienced wind gusts that peaked at 52 mph by 4 p.m. Friday.

Red Cross has set up to offer assistance at two church meetinghouses located at 500 N. Bluff St. and 100 S. Main.

Additional information, including the cause of or the extent of the fire, has not yet been released.
