WEST VALLEY CITY — Three juveniles are in custody following an attempted mugging at gunpoint at Valley Fair Mall Sunday, authorities say.
Shortly after 5 p.m., the three juveniles walked up to three people who had finished shopping and were in the Valley Fair Mall parking lot, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. Jason Vincent.
One of the juveniles pulled out a firearm, put a bullet in the gun, racked the gun's slide and demanded the shoppers give them their shoes, Vincent said.
One of the three shoppers managed to call police.
When officers arrived on the scene, the juveniles fled west on foot into the nearby neighborhoods. Officers released K-9s and set up a containment perimeter, Vincent said.
Two of the three suspects were located, and the third was discovered later by law enforcement after a citizen called into police saying they saw a person climbing down a tree within the containment perimeter and followed them, according to Vincent.
A firearm was recovered by police, and one officer suffered mild injuries after falling during the foot chase, Vincent stated.
Nothing was ever actually stolen, as the victims refused to give up their shoes.
