APPLE VALLEY, Washington County — A 50-year-old man was found dead inside a home damaged by the Apple Valley Fire, officials with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands said. By Tuesday afternoon, the fire had been 100% contained.
The man was found dead in the damaged structure and appeared to have suffered a medical emergency.
Witnesses told authorities they drove toward the fire to make sure everyone was OK and found the man and took him away from the flames to meet with medical staff, who were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His cause of death is under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Five homes were threatened by the fire, state and federal fire officials reported through Utah Fire Info. Officials said Monday night the fire had burned about 80 acres, but later said it was mapped at 49 acres.
Wind drove the initial attack, fire officials said. The fire, which was 10% contained by 10:30 p.m., began about 7:35 p.m. about 2 miles west of Apple Valley.
Air and ground resources were being used to fight the fire Monday night.
Fire officials originally reported one structure had been destroyed but later said it was damaged, not burned down. Two structures were damaged in the blaze, one home and an outbuilding.
The fire was human-caused but the exact cause remained under investigation on Tuesday.
