ST. GEORGE — A fire swept through a St. George home early Sunday morning, displacing a woman and three teenage grandsons and rendering the house a total loss.
The fire was called in about 5:45 a.m. at 1747 W. Red Cloud Dr. in the Ledges area in north St. George. The fire started in the garage and had spread into the home's interior and attic, making the home "fairly well involved" by the time crews arrived, said St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker.
"The occupant ... opened the garage and noticed the fire in the garage, at which time she was able to evacuate the home with her grandsons," Stoker said. Her grandsons were staying at the house for the weekend.
Crews initiated a defensive fire attack. St. George fire was assisted by the Winchester Hills, Diamond Valley and Dammeron Valley fire departments.
A home on one side of the burning house sustained heat damage, Stoker said. The fire was contained to the original home, he said, but it's "pretty much a total loss."
The department estimates the fire caused $400,000 in damage. In addition to the house, one of the grandsons' cars was consumed in the garage and another was damaged in the driveway, Stoker said.
A one-room casita trailer in front of the house was saved.
Stoker said the fire appears to have been accidental, but its cause is under investigation at this time.
