MAGNA — Police pulled a man out of a burning home early Monday morning but were unable to save him. He died at the scene, authorities said.

The fire occurred about 4:30 a.m. at 3378 S. Broadway Street.

The man was 10-15 feet inside the home and confined to a wheelchair, according to Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.

An officer went inside and got him out of the house. Once outside, officers tried to perform life-saving measures on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Anderton added.

Unified police later identified the man who died as Willis Shepherd, 96.

A man and woman made it out of the house, Anderton said. It was not clear if they suffered any injuries.

The fire was isolated to a bedroom in the basement of the home. There were no working smoke alarms in the home, Anderton said. He added that it was unclear whether working smoke alarms would have changed the outcome of the fire.

The home had smoke damage and investigators were still working Monday morning to determine the cause of the fire and the cause of the man’s death, Anderton said.
