BOUNTIFUL — South Davis Recreation Center lifeguards revived a girl Monday after she nearly drowned, authorities say.
South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jeff Bassett said it was about 4 p.m. when paramedics responded to the call of a juvenile girl who somehow ended up at the bottom of the pool at the center, located at 550 N. 200 West in Bountiful.
Authorities said they aren't sure if she accidentally slipped and fell into the pool or had a medical episode. Bassett said lifeguards noticed she was at the bottom of the pool and pulled her out.
The girl was initially unresponsive but lifeguards performed CPR and revived her, Bassett added. She was semiconscious when South Davis Metro Fire arrived and transported her by ambulance to Primary Children's Hospital. Her current condition was not immediately known by officials.
Bassett noted there have been other incidents at the pool before where lifeguards intervened and helped patrons.
"They do an excellent job," Bassett said of the lifeguards. He added that drowning incidents do, unfortunately, occur throughout the summer.
Bassett advised those who have private pools with no lifeguards to always have someone watching the water, similar to the idea of a "designated driver."
