VERNAL — A woman is dead after an apartment fire in Vernal Friday evening.

Crews responded to tenants' reports of the smell of ammonia and smoke coming from a neighboring apartment, No. 3, at 355 E. 100 North, about 10 p.m. Friday, according to Uintah Fire District director Jeremy Raymond.

When firefighters arrived, they observed smoke coming out of the window of apartment No. 4 instead. Crews entered and found “heavy smoke” at the top of the stairs of the two-story unit, Raymond said.

Neighbors told firefighters that a person was possibly inside the unit. Upon searching the second floor of the two-story unit, crews found a 35-year-old woman.

"Due to the extent of the injuries, the EMTs and law enforcement declared the patient deceased," Raymond said.

Officials have not identified the woman, pending family notification.

No one else was injured in the fire.

Damage to the unit was estimated at $40,000, Raymond said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
