SPRINGVILLE –– A water main broke Saturday morning near state Route 51 in Springville, causing road closures and affecting the water supply for an estimated 20 homes.
The city's public works, the water department, the fire department, and UDOT all responded to calls about a water main breaking around 1 a.m. Crews said there was a 6-inch water main running through the area, around 14 feet deep, according to Lt. Warren Foster of the Springville police.
Leaking water caused roads to ice over, temporarily closing state Route 89 at the state Route 51 split until around 800 South in Springville. Around 20 homes were affected by the break, temporarily leaving them without water.
“Because of the depth we need to get a larger excavator in there so the workers can do this safely without creating any sort of danger,” Foster said.
The road was reopened about 4:30 p.m., but Foster said residents should be aware of road damage because crews weren't able to fix it today due to cold weather.
The cause of the water main break remains under investigation.
