SPANISH FORK — A pilot was treated for minor scratches and scrapes after he crashed a gyrocopter shortly after he took off, officials said.

The 59-year-old pilot is a student and was the only person in the aircraft, according to an emailed statement from Spanish Fork Police Lt. Brandon Anderson.

The pilot took off from the runway at the Spanish Fork Airport about 11:35 a.m. Thursday, Anderson said. As the aircraft took off, it veered to the left and the rotor blade hit the surface of the runway, he said. The gyrocopter then slid off the runway.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, Anderson said.

Emergency medical personnel treated the pilot at the scene of the crash. His name was not released. Police and fire officials also responded to the crash.
