Continuing coverage: Wildfires threatening structures throughout Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Four new wildfires sparked Wednesday, and with red flag warnings issued throughout Utah with some of those fires threatening structures across the state.

In addition, a new fire sparked near Minersville in Beaver County Thursday. That fire has closed Highway 130 in the area as crews begin to work on the fire.

According to Utah Fire Info, there are currently nine fires burning in the state. They range from Box Elder to Washington counties.

Black Mountain Fire (near Minersville, Beaver County)

Officials released details about the crash that caused a fire Thursday afternoon and led to the closure of state Route 130. It happened about 12:45 p.m., the driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer traveling north drifted off the right shoulder and into the dirt about 2 miles south of Minersville, Utah Highway Patrol officials said via the agency's website. The driver then overcorrect to the left and then back to the right, causing the vehicle to roll several times. The driver was taken to Beaver Valley Hospital with minor injuries. The rollover crash sparked a brush fire that continues to burn about 5,000 acres, or about 6.25 square miles, as of Thursday night, UHP officials said. Authorities have closed state Route 130 from the south end of Minersville to Midvalley Road in Enoch due to lack of visibility in the area. The road will remain closed until Friday morning.

West Valley Fire (near New Harmony, Washington County)

After growing an estimated 4,700 acres throughout the day, the fire is now believed to be at 7,200 acres — about 11.25 square miles — and zero percent contained officials report. The fire is currently threatening approximately 10 homes on private land near the Mill Flat Trailhead. A Red Flag warning is still in effect Friday evening and is expected to last until Friday about 10 p.m., according to West Valley Fire spokesman Bode Mecham. Officials anticipate weather conditions to create challenges in containing the fire. A specialized team is expected to bring in more resources by Saturday morning to help battle the blaze. State Route 130 will remain closed until Friday morning, officials confirm. Authorities shut down the highway Thursday afternoon due to a 4,000-acre fire that sparked about 2 miles south of Minersville. Officials believe it was human-caused.

Trail Mountain Fire (near Huntington, Emery County)

Officials report the fire has grown to 17,767 acres and is 80 percent contained. "Unstable weather will prove the greatest challenge over the next few days," officials with the Manti-La Sal National Forest tweeted. Authorities urge the public to remain cautious when driving through Huntington Canyon and to avoid stopping along the road.

Black Mountain Fire (near Minersville, Beaver County) started by a crash

Officials say a traffic accident on state Route 130 ignited the Black Mountain Fire. The fire remains at 4,000 acres in size and is 0 percent contained, according to a statement by Bureau of Land Management spokesman Nick Howell.

New fire sparks near Minersville; infrastructure threatened

A fire sparked about 2 miles south of Minersville in Beaver County Thursday afternoon, Bureau of Land Management spokesman Nick Howell said in a tweet. It has been named the Black Mountain Fire. Highway 130 is closed because of it. Officials initially estimated it as 100 acres in size, but quickly adjusted that number to 4,000 acres. It threatening infrastructure in the area. Howell said the fire is human-caused; the exact cause is under investigation.

Crews make progress on Dry Canyon Fire (near Parowan, Iron County)

Bureau of Land Management spokesman Nick Howell said crews have made "good progress" in battling the 23-acre fire and that it is now 30 percent contained. Highway 143 is open in the area, he added. No structures are believed to be threatened by the fire. The cause of the fire, which was determined to be human-caused, is under investigation.

Officials say the fire burning near the Utah-Idaho border has now burned more than 3,000 acres, as of late Thursday morning.

Crews hope to wrap up Fruitland Fire (near Fruitland, Duchesne County)

Fire crews wrapped up firefighting efforts against a blaze that destroyed a house and a trailer home in Fruitland Wednesday afternoon, said Mike Eriksson, spokesman for the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. “I don’t know if they’ll call it 100 percent contained, but they’ve already started mopping up portions of the fire,” he said. “It hasn’t grown since yesterday around 6 p.m.” Eriksson said some crews have been switched fight to the Rough Canyon Fire in Box Elder County, while others worked to control the rest of the Fruitland fire Thursday. He said in addition to the homes, more than a dozen sheds, tractors or vehicles were destroyed. Though officials believe the fire is human-caused, investigators aren’t sure what the official cause is. Erikkson said witnesses were being interviewed.

Rough Canyon Fire (near Portage, Box Elder County)

The fire has burned more than 1,400 acres, as of Thursday morning. It remains 0 percent contained, though there are no evacuations being ordered, Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands officials said. Several people and resources have been dispatched to the fire including four water tenders, 10 engines, two single-engine air tankers, two helicopters and 10 overhead personnel. The fire is believed to be human-caused.

Trail Mountain Fire (near Huntington, Emery County)

The fire raging in central Utah remains the largest of Utah's current fires. Bureau of Land Management officials said it is now 80 percent contained. Officials said drivers traveling on state Route 31 in the area should use caution.

Dry Canyon Fire (near Parowan, Iron County)

The fire is now 30 percent contained after burning about 30 to 40 acres, according to Parowan police. Officials said the Cedar City and Snake River hotshot crews are dispatched to the area to fight the fire along with about 40 firefighters from across the state.

West Valley Fire (near New Harmony, Washington County)

The fire grew an additional 500 acres overnight and is now believed to be 2,500 acres, or about 3.9 square miles, in size. None of it is contained. Bureau of Land Management officials say the fire is threatening 10 homes near the Mill Flat Trailhead, which is located about 3 miles from it. However, no evacuations have been issued yet. Eight fire engines, three air tankers, two heli-tankers and two helicopters were assigned to fight the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fruitland Shed Fire (near Fruitland, Duchesne County)

The fire, which has burned about 20 acres (equivalent to 20 football fields) is now 75 percent contained, according to Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands spokesman Mike Eriksson. The fire is believed to be human-caused, although an exact cause is unknown. A firefighter was also treated for smoke inhalation on Wednesday but is expected to be OK. Duchesne County Sheriff's officials said two permanent residences were destroyed and the Red Cross is assisting residents who lost their homes.
