MURRAY — Cottonwood Heights police recovered several stolen packages and prescription drugs after arresting two people who led them on a chase Friday morning, police said.

The chase began around 10:15 a.m. after an officer witnessed a package theft at a home near 2000 E. Creek Road, according to Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Ryan Shosted. The officer attempted to stop the driver of a white truck, but the driver sped off and a chase ensued; however, the driver was driving erratically, so the officer called off the chase, Shosted said.

Several minutes later, a second officer saw the white truck still being driven recklessly and attempted to also stop the vehicle, but quickly called off the pursuit.

A third officer witnessed the vehicle pull into the L. Clark Cushing Heritage Center at 10 E. 6150 South in Murray. The officer saw the vehicle drive toward two people walking toward the building and worried that the truck was going to hit the pedestrians. The detective performed a pit maneuver on the truck, sending it crashing into a third vehicle in the parking lot.

No one was injured in the incident, but the police vehicle was damaged in the collision.

The detective arrested Mike Rucker, 25, and Britney Knight, 27, inside the vehicle just before 10:30 a.m. Upon further investigation, the officer discovered several stolen packages and prescription drugs inside the truck, Shosted said. It was unknown if Rucker and Knight were under the influence of drugs during the pursuit.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
