SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert will undergo surgery for kidney stone removal on Friday afternoon, a spokesman confirmed.

“Because of unexplained abdominal pain, Governor Herbert met with a specialist at LDS hospital yesterday morning and was diagnosed with two kidney stones,” Herbert’s deputy chief of staff Paul Edwards said Wednesday in an emailed statement.

Authority will temporarily be transferred to Lt. Governor Spencer Cox when Herbert goes under anesthesia at about 3 p.m. Friday, Edwards said.

Even though the governor has had pain, Edwards said Herbert had maintained his full schedule on Wednesday, including delivering the State of the State address.

Herbert met with justices of the Supreme Court, as well as some family members and friends, after the speech. On Tuesday night, Herbert hosted his annual legislators’ open house at the Governor’s Mansion, Edwards said.
