SALT LAKE CITY — Things went from bad to worse for the BYU football team late Saturday night in Fresno, California.
After dropping to a miserable 2-8 with a 20-13 loss to Fresno State, the Cougars confirmed worse news in the early hours of the morning: Tanner Mangum’s season is over.
The junior quarterback went down with a non-contact ankle injury in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss, and officials with the university confirmed shortly after head coach Kalani Sitake’s postgame press conference that Mangum’s season was finished with an Achilles’ tendon injury.
Where do the Cougars go from here, and what should be the focus of the final three games of the season against UNLV, UMass and Hawaii? Former BYU linebacker David Nixon and Utah defensive lineman Christian Cox break down the loss, the injury to Mangum, and the run game of junior tailback Squally Canada, who ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

After that, the duo turns its attention to Utah, which snapped its longest losing streak since 2013 with a 48-14 home win over UCLA in a Friday night blackout game.
The Utes racked up 506 yards of offense against the woeful Bruins, including 234 yards through the air via sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley in a victory desperately needed.
Around the rest of the state, Utah State picked up a vital road win 24-10 at New Mexico to move within a game of bowl eligibility, and Weber State and Southern Utah both earned victories to keep themselves in contention for a Big Sky title.
