SALT LAKE CITY — A South Salt Lake woman has been sent to jail for starting a costly fire in an apartment building during an argument while breaking up with her boyfriend.

Diamond Sullivan, 37, and her boyfriend "were in the process of breaking up" on Oct. 12 when the man left the apartment to get away from the argument, according to charging documents. The couple shared a room in an apartment at 3596 S. 300 East, police said.

While the man was gone, charges say "(Sullivan) was upset, so she poured butane all over a pile of clothes and lit it on fire."

The fire destroyed the interior of the home, causing $100,000 in damage, according to the South Salt Lake Fire Department.

The couple had been renting a room in the home from another man, court documents state. Four others were inside the home when Sullivan set the fire in the room she and her boyfriend had been staying in.

Sullivan was charged days later with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony. She pleaded guilty in March to arson, a third-degree felony.

Sullivan had spent 201 days in jail by the time her May 5 sentencing hearing came around, according to court records. Third District Judge James Blanch suspended a possible prison sentence of zero to five years in prison and gave Sullivan credit for the time she had served, ordering her instead to complete 36 months of probation.
