SALT LAKE CITY — For the first time in the history of the state of Utah, we had a nationally televised game originating from the Beehive State. We also had plenty of college football signings, and a McDonald's All-American.
Lone Peak's Frank Jackson received his McDonald's All-American jersey at an assembly at the high school, becoming the first All-American from Utah since Brighton's Garner Mads in 2000. Jackson then put on a show in the Knights' 68-61 win over St. Joseph's (New Jersey) late Friday night on ESPNU.
Brighton's record-breaking wide receiver Simi Fehoko maintained his commitment to Stanford by signing on the dotted line Wednesday morning, but he wasn't the only one. There were plenty of surprises for BYU and Utah — both good and bad, including an NCAA recruiting violation by new Cougars offensive coordinator Ty Detmer. Oops.
There were also plenty of big games, from Murray-Olympus, Timpview-Timpanogos, East-Woods Cross, Highland-East, Brighton-Binghma, Westlake-American Fork, and South Summit and Summit Academy.
