OGDEN, Utah (AP) — An Ogden man has been given the maximum prison sentence in connection with the 2013 shooting death of another man at a party.
The Standard-Examiner reports 42-year-old Ruben Alvarado Nava III was found guilty of manslaughter in June. A judge on Tuesday gave him the maximum sentence, two to 15 years in prison for manslaughter and up to five years for illegal possession of a firearm.
Nava was originally charged with murder in the death of 23-year-old Mario Saucedo, but the jury chose to convict Nava of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Police say Nava was at a house party in Roy when he got into an argument with Saucedo. He then shot Saucedo several times, killing him.
Nava's attorney had argued that his client acted in self-defense.
