PROVO — If the BYU women's soccer opening scrimmage is any indicator, sophomore Nadia Gomes will have an even bigger role in the offense.
Gomes scored the opening goal, a tap-in rip into the top shelf off an assist from Madie Lyons, and the Blue team beat the White team 3-0 at South Field on Tuesday night.
"It was a good team effort to get up there, and once I was there, all the people showed up to the box and it was easy to make a cross and know that someone was going to be there," Gomes said.
Elena Medeiros put back a goal off the crossbar in the 47th minute to double the advantage, and Michele Murphy Vasconcelos finished Jocelyn Loomis' longball on the counterattack in the 69th minute to finish the scoring in the second of two 35-minute halves.
"I thought Nadia was phenomenal tonight, in every aspect of the game," BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "The creativity she brings, the composure, her defending."
Gomes led all shooters with eight shots, Medeiros added five shots, and Marissa Nimmer Linehan had three shots.
"It was really fun, especially against our own team," Gomes said. "I think it was more competitive against our own team, too. It was just fun."
The game also featured three BYU assistant coaches, while leading scorer Ashley Hatch nursed a minor groin injury. Among the roster subs were former BYU players Aleisha Rose and McKinzie Olson, who both saw time at center back.
"I told Aleisha she should be ready to put on a jersey if we needed her," Rockwood said with a laugh. "It's great that I can have three assistant coaches on the field, and they can play."
BYU will host Arizona on Saturday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game before opening the season Aug. 21 against No. 18 Cal in Hawaii.
