SALT LAKE CITY — A 7-eleven store clerk discovered a hollowed-out grenade in a milk crate near a dumpster of the convenience store Tuesday afternoon, but police have not yet identified the person who left it there.
Police responded to the 7-eleven located at 483 S. Redwood Road at about 1:15 p.m. and confirmed the object was a grenade, according to Salt Lake police Det. Veronica Montoya.
The explosive device unit then responded with their robot, which deemed the grenade safe, Montoya said.
Montoya believes customers were cleared out of the store until their safety was ensured.
Police were not immediately sure why someone left the grenade there, but Montoya said it was meant for somebody to find.
The Salt Lake City Police Department has previously seen similar situations and Montoya suggests backing off and calling the police so they can handle it.
“I know they send our hazardous device unit out to other parts of Utah as well, and they can do it safely ... they have the robot,” Montoya said.
Montoya said this could be a criminal mischief crime, but these situations depend on if the person left the device intentionally to put fear in others.
