SANDY — A man accused of threatening to "beat, kill, stab and slice" his girlfriend and put her in an oven in a disturbing case of domestic violence now faces 13 criminal charges in two episodes of extreme violence.

Bail for Joseph Anthony Castellanos, 31, of Sandy, is set at $1 million.

He was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with two counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies. Castellanos was also charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; six counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; propelling bodily substances, a class A misdemeanor; and criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor.

On June 26, Sandy police were called to a home near 8900 S. State where a woman — using a cellphone she had hidden in her bathroom for "emergencies" — whispered to a 911 dispatcher, "He tried to kill me," according to charging documents.

When officers arrived, they discovered that Castellanos had beat the woman, stabbed her with a fork, urinated on her, beat her with a belt and then attempted to put her inside an oven.

"(Castellanos) turned on the oven … told her to get inside, but she begged him to reconsider," the charges state. "(Castellanos) grabbed two knives and began swinging them at her."

Later, Castellanos attempted to pick up the woman and put her in the oven, but then changed his mind, police said. He said he was going to "boil (her) alive and began heating water, and also attempted to "pour toilet bowl cleaner down her throat," the charges state.

The apparent reason for Castellanos' rage was because he felt the woman didn't answer his Facebook messages from work fast enough, police said. The woman said she was having computer problems at home. When his messages finally did come through, they "included threats to kill (her), stomp on her head and face stab her."

Investigators learned that approximately a month earlier, Castellanos beat the woman for several hours, stabbed her in the thigh with a knife, bound her hands with a belt and her legs with a computer cord and threw her in a bathtub of hot water, charging documents state.

The woman said when she attempted to run away, she couldn't get far because of her leg injury and Castellanos went "crazy," grabbed her hair and led her back into the house where he kicked, slapped and punched her, the charges state.

The next morning, Castellanos told the woman he loved her. But when she didn't reciprocate the sentiment, he raped her twice, according to the charges.
