MURRAY — Wesslee Berger is on a mission.

The 7-year-old boy from Payson wants to visit every Utah law enforcement agency to thank officers for going out there and being the "good guys” — even when it’s really tough.

“He loves (that) there is this force out there keeping him safe,” said Valerie Berger, Wesslee’s mother.

So, when officers from the Utah Highway Patrol and Unified Police Department heard Weslee wanted to visit them Saturday at the UHP’s Murray office, 5681 Commerce Drive, they made sure it was a visit he would remember.

Wesslee spent the morning playing fetch with a police K-9, checking out an officer’s motorcycle and an armored vehicle, and collecting a few patches and pins to take home.

“I like police,” Wesslee said.

But his love for law enforcement is more than just the goodies they give him; Wesslee said he feels sad whenever he hears about something bad happening to an officer. Though young, he knows police officers are getting hurt — or worse — on the job.

“I asked him specifically, ‘Why are you doing this?’ And he said, ‘Because of how you guys have been treated bad,’” said UHP Sgt. Larry Mower. “That really touched my heart.”

After Saturday’s visit, Wesslee was one step closer to his goal of sharing gratitude with all of his Utah heroes.

“You have to appreciate the mission he’s on,” said Unified police detective Ken Hansen. “We appreciate it because this isn’t something we hear a lot about.”
