LAYTON — Layton has a new police chief, city officials announced Friday.

Allen Swanson, a 23-year veteran of the Layton Police Department, is taking over leadership of the department. Swanson was named assistant chief in 2008.

"(Swanson's) experience and leadership have helped shape us into the department we are today," Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said in a prepared statement.

Swanson graduated from the FBI National Academy, Drug Unit Commander Academy and Weber State University. He is taking over for Terry Keefe, who retired in January.

Keefe served more than 40 years in law enforcement, including time spent as West Valley police chief. He had served as chief in Layton since 1999.
