OGDEN, Utah (AP) — An Ogden man pleaded guilty to killing his girlfriend's 14-month-old daughter in a hotel room.

The Ogden Standard Examiner reports that 24-year-old Adam Joseph Barney pleaded guilty to aggravated murder on Wednesday. The plea allows him to avoid the death penalty and life without parole.

Prosecutors say Barney hit Kenzie Rose La Buy in the face and stomach several times in August. He was watching his then-girlfriend's children while she worked and said he snapped because the toddler was crying while two other kids misbehaved.

The baby girl was found dead at the Western Colony Inn.

An Ogden detective testified in January that Barney admitted to killing the toddler.

Family members described Kenzie La Buy as an energetic and happy toddler who had a beloved Husky stuffed animal.
