LAYTON — A man wanted in connection with a series of retails thefts was arrested after a pursuit Tuesday, police said.

Officers spotted an unoccupied Chrysler 300, which matched vehicle descriptions provided during a number of recent retail theft investigations, parked near apartments at 1475 N. Main Street in Layton at about 9:45 a.m., according to the Centerville Police Department. Investigators said the same vehicle was involved in a Utah Highway Patrol pursuit Monday, which was reportedly terminated for safety.

Nicholas R. Campbell, 29, was observed walking towards the parked car, according to police. They said he matched the description of a wanted fugitive.

“One of the officers gave commands to the male to stop, but he quickly got in the car and fled,” a statement from police reads. “The officer managed to throw out spikes as the car was fleeing, and the car ran over the spikes.”

The right front tire of the vehicle went flat, but investigators said Campbell continued driving at a high rate of speed and entered the southbound lanes of I-15. After reaching speeds of close to 90 mph, Campbell eventually stopped near Boondocks in Kaysville as a result of the vehicle’s tire coming apart, according to police.

Campbell was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and potential theft related charges, in addition to a warrant, according to police. He was booked into the Davis County Jail.

His girlfriend, who is also believed to be involved with the retails thefts, is said to be cooperating with the investigation. Detectives were working to obtain a warrant for her arrest before the incident, but she has not yet been taken into custody, according to Centerville police.
