SALT LAKE CITY — TRAX trains are running normally again after two trains that collided Tuesday afternoon caused significant delays for about six hours, according to the Utah Transit Authority.
There will be residual delays as the trains get back to their regular schedule, UTA reported.
The crash occurred when a green line train travelling east was turning left and collided on 2100 South and 300 West at a low speed with a blue line train travelling north. One of the trains was derailed, according to Utah Transit Authority spokesperson Remi Barron.
As of 5:15 p.m., UTA reported to expect 30 minute delays on all TRAX lines.
“It’s unfortunate it happened right before the afternoon/evening commute,” Barron said. “We’re surprised as anyone else when two trains come together like this, it’s a real infrequent thing.”
A bus bridge was implemented after the accident to transport passengers on the incident train from the scene. The bus bridge will transport passengers from Ballpark station to River Trail and Millcreek Station. The rails between Central Pointe and Millcreek Stations are blocked, according to UTA.
There were no serious injuries sustained from the crash, but one woman was transported to the hospital after complaining of leg pain, Barron said.
Officials do not yet know why the accident occurred, but Barron said sometimes when it is cold, snowy or icy, the switches freeze. UTA checks switches and crossing areas to make sure they are operating correctly, Barron said.
The accident is currently under investigation and will be reported to the Federal Railroad Administration, Barron said.
