Proposing marriage can put a guy under a lot of pressure. You want it to be romantic, unique and meaningful. So you don't have to, we've scoured the web to find some of the best proposal ideas around. So skip the typical dinner proposal and spice it up with one of these fun and personalize-able ideas.

(Some of these ideas, or similar ones, were originally published on theknot.com and howheasked.com.)

1. Become a storyteller

Make a video of yourself telling the story of the two of you. Include funny and touching moments. For a special touch, interview friends and family, asking them why she’s such a wonderful woman.

For an extra kick of romance, record yourself asking her parents for permission to marry their daughter. It’ll likely be an emotional moment for them that she’d like to see.

2. Make it visual

This one requires a lot of forethought. Without your partner knowing, capture moments on video or through pictures over an extended period of time. Put the video or pictures together into one clip of the two of you with her favorite romantic music.

When the countdown of romantic moments reaches the current day, have a photo of you kneeling with the ring. When she turns to you in surprise, get down on one knee and pop the question.

3. A caricature to remember

You've seen caricature artists in public places and often marvel at their creative minds. Set up an appointment with a caricaturist (make your gal think it's impromptu on the street).

Have the caricaturist sketch a picture of you two. When he turns it around for the big reveal, he will sketched the message, "Will you marry me?" After she answers yes, have him draw that in and you can keep the drawing forever.

4. The perfect mix

To combine the best of a public and private proposal, throw a party with friends and family having everyone carry balloons with each the letters in the phrase, "will you marry me?" printed on them.

At the end of the night suggest a group picture. Use a Polaroid or digital camera so that later when you show her the photo she’ll be surprised to see that everyone was in on your special moment without the pressure of them being there in the moment.

5. Make it glow

For a real surprise she won’t see coming, spell your proposal out in glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. (Glow in the dark alphabet stickers work too.) Turn the lights off wait for the gasp. We also recommend you do another activity leading up to this, dinner perhaps...

6. Show your history

If you’re looking for something personal and private with a dramatic, but not cliché, flare, fill a favorite room in your home with photos from your relationship. Hang them from balloons or cover the walls with them. It’ll show your history and how much she means to you all at once.

7. For the athletic couple

Are you both exercise lovers? Suggest a jog together and make a special playlist for the run. Either use a special song or record yourself singing (or just talking about how much you love her). As it comes up, fake a side ache, kneel down and have the ring ready.

8. For the gamers... board gamers.

If the two of you are big board game fans, suggest a night of Scrabble. When she least expects it pretend to get really frustrated with your letters and jokingly insist on switching tiles. Pass yours to her with the letters spelling out “I Love You,” “Be Mine Forever” or let them do all the work for you by spelling “Will You Marry Me.”

9. Make it techy

For the tech-savvy fellow, build her a custom website. Include your story as a couple, your undying love for her, some wedding rings of course and a place for the special question.

Once she's said yes, consider building in some travel pages for potential honeymoon options.

10. When it's chilly outside

If it’s a chilly evening or an early morning you plan to propose, get a special mug (or commandeer one of her favorites) and get the big question added to the bottom of the mug. Make her a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Just make sure she finishes the whole thing to reveal the special message.

11. Food lovers

For the foodies, plan ahead with your favorite restaurant to take one of their normal menus and insert the question in the inside. When you sit down and she opens the menu she’ll be surprised to find it isn’t just the night’s specials.

12. Literature lovers

Is she a writer or does she keep a diary? Buy a new journal and on the first page print “all the reasons I want to be with you forever.” Then fill the pages with notes and pictures of all the reasons you love and want to marry her. You can even add in notes from friends and family and glue in ticket stubs from shows and events you went to together.

13. Involve a pet

Have the two of you always planned on getting a pet? Adopt a kitten, puppy or rabbit and put the ring on the collar. Give her the new pet and wait for her to notice the ring. The new pet can represent the commitment you have for the future.

14. Scavenger hunt

Think about places that are associated with the two of you as a couple. Your favorite restaurant, park, etc. Create a scavenger hunt and send your lady to the places these places before she arrives at her destination where you'll be with a ring.

15. Photo booth fun

Go into a photo booth at a mall or amusement park. Make the first picture silly, then pull out a sign, or better yet, the ring and propose. She’ll be surprised and it’ll all be caught on film without having a friend hide in a bush.

Having the perfect ring coupled with the perfect proposal will ensure your proposal is personal to your relationship. After all, the most important question you'll ever ask should be coupled with equal preparation.
