ST. GEORGE — Four men were injured in a fight that involved a knife and an ax Tuesday night, police said.

Officers responded to the incident at 2056 E. Middleton Drive around 9:30 p.m., according to the St. George Police Department. Investigators said they found four men in their early 20s with knife wounds on various parts of their bodies.

“The injuries consisted of cuts to the neck and back of one, a cut to the left side upper torso of another, and cuts on the hands of the third,” a statement from police reads. “The fourth individual, who was not transported (by ambulance to the Dixie Regional Medical Center), received minor cuts to his fingers. The three who were transported were listed in stable condition.”

Investigators said they learned two other men had previously fled the scene on foot. They were located by officers a short time later. Officers also found a knife that is 3 inches long and an ax, according to police. They believe that the knife was used to wound the men, but the ax was only displayed during the fight.

This case is still very much active and ongoing.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing, but it appears the fight started when a group of four men approached two other men who were talking outside. They said the encounter escalated until a knife was presented and used during the altercation.

"This case is still very much active and ongoing," said Sgt. Sam Despain. "Our investigators are still interviewing and speaking with the many people who were involved and witnessed the events that took place last night."

Two of the men were detained Tuesday night, according to Despain.

Jerome Nelson, 20, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia after officers located a backpack belonging to him during the investigation, according to police. They said he also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Also in the backpack was Nelson's high school diploma and "work documents," according to charging documents.

As of late Wednesday, investigators were "trying to determine who the aggressors were."

Charges against the men may be filed at a later date pending the ongoing investigation, according to the St. George Police Department.
