LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Police have identified a 69-year-old man who died after being swept out to see off Kauai over the weekend as Junies Jenkins of St. George, Utah.

Kauai County identified him on Tuesday.

Jenkins was in shallow water near a channel at Anini Beach when he was swept to sea at about 3 p.m. Sunday.

Bystanders attempted to rescue Jenkins using paddle boards and a dive buoy. Water safety officers rode personal watercraft to the scene off the island's north shore.

Firefighters performed CPR before medics arrived and took him to a hospital in Lihue where he was pronounced dead.

Kauai County says Jenkins appears to have drowned.
