2 new records set at Speed Skating World Cup hosted in Kearns

KEARNS — The Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns lived up to its reputation as the "Fastest Ice on Earth" Sunday as two records were set during a World Cup speed skating event.

China's Kexin Fan set a world record in the ladies speed skating 500-meter with a time of 42.504. Fan went on to win the gold medal in this International Skating Union World Cup event. Jessica Smith of the United States set a national record in the very same race with a time of 43.046.

In the mens 500-meter, USA's John-Henry Krueger earned a gold medal with a time of 40.820, beating Russia's Victor An, who won a gold in Sochi during the 2014 Olympics. An received a penalty and was disqualified.

In the ladies 1000-meter, Korea's Suk Hee Shim won with a time of 1:35.740. Yi Ra Sea, also of Korea, won the mens 1000-meter with a time of 1:23.390.

Korea also won the ladies 3000-meter team relay in 4:06.916, while Russia won the mens 5000-meter relay in 6:39.343. Team USA came in third at 6:43.280.
