KEARNS — Police were investigating after a car hit a house, broke a gas meter, and the driver fled.

Investigators said the car ran off the road into the front yard of a home near 4900 South and 4800 West around 11 p.m. and slammed into a gas meter. Police said the driver ran from the scene.

Fire crews responded and called the situation very dangerous. They weren't sure if the homeowners had the furnace on in the house and feared the spewing gas might build up inside the home.

“It’s something that we definitely want to evacuate for and take precautions,” said Zach Robinson of the Unified Fire Department.

They evacuated two homes and Questar crews worked to repair the gas meter.

Police ran the license plates of the car involved in the crash and caught up with the owner. She told them her 15-year-old nephew had taken her car, but witnesses said they saw a woman run from the scene, according to police.

Investigators were still trying to determine why the car veered off the road, whether the driver was intoxicated or fell asleep at the wheel.
