WATERFALL CANYON — This short but difficult hike will get your heart rate going before it rewards you with a beautiful view.
The trail takes hikers through beautiful land all along the way, occasionally opening up into views of Ogden. But once you enter the canyon, greenery gets dense and the trail follows a pretty stream to the fall.
The trail starts at the top of 29th Street in Ogden, where a parking lot is located and clearly marked as the access to Mt. Ogden Trailhead and Waterfall Canyon. Take the trail marked Malan Falls.
An iron gate welcomes visitors to hike through private property at two points in the hike to the canyon, but use appropriate etiquette when traveling through.
Once you reach the Bonneville Shoreline, watch for the scenic route trail marker for Waterfall Canyon.
Follow the scenic route to the mouth of Waterfall Canyon. The trail narrows, steepens and gets rocky at this point, so prepare to climb the rest of the way.
Depending on the time of the year, hikers may have to cross the stream. Currently, however, water levels are low and the trail is mostly dry. Water levels will also affect the waterfall, which can go from a powerful fall in the early spring to a trickle in late summer or fall.
Regardless, the vantage point is worth the hike. Once hikers reach the top of the trail, Ogden lies below like a miniature city.
Once hikers are done at the falls, take the quick route from the shoreline back to the parking lot.
