SALT LAKE CITY — The Bingham Miners represented the state of Utah well Friday night in Las Vegas taking the No. 1 team in the country to overtime.

A 47-yard field goal with just seconds left in regulation sent the wild game into overtime. The Miners had a chance to win the game with a touchdown in OT, but the Bishop Gorman defense sacked Bingham quarterback Kyle Gearig forcing a fumble and recovery to end the Miners' upset bid, 23-20.

Bishop Gorman was ranked No. 1 by USA Today, while the Miners were ranked 18th entering the game.

There was another wild game Friday night in Utah County where two teams combined for 107 points in a regulation game, tied for 11th-most in a game in state history. Jordan outlasted Pleasant Grove, 55-52, led by another stellar performance by 2012 Mr. Football Austin Kafentzis.

The four-year starter outdueled Vikings quarterback Christian Miller (27 of 46, 377 yards, four TDs, two INTs) by scoring six touchdowns, two passing and four rushing. Pleasant Grove’s 52 points were the most scored by a losing team in state history.

Watch the highlights of both games on the latest Game Night Live.

Top Five Performers

Cody Hobbs, Roy

Cody caught six passes for 208 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown reception. He was just as good on defense making nine tackles, a sack and the game-clinching interception in a 27-20 win over rival Fremont.

Nephi Sewell, Desert Hills

Sewell returned a punt 55 yards and a fumble 38 yards in Desert Hills' 29-14 win over Legacy, Nevada. Sewell also had two interceptions returned for touchdowns, a fumble returned for touchdown and punt return for a score in his last two games.

Tyler Hale, Syracuse

Hale is an undersized linebacker, but he played big in Friday’s 16-13 overtime win against Mountain Crest. He set a school record with 25 combined tackles (13 solo, 11 assisted, 1 tackle for loss)

Chayden Johnston, Bingham

Johnston was clutch for the Miners in their battle with the nation’s No. 1 ranked team Bishop Gorman. He made a 47-yard field goal to send the game into overtime. He is committed to Utah.

Nathan Barnes, Milford

Barnes caught four passes for 189 yards and a touchdown on offense, while on defense made eight tackles in Milford’s 26-0 win over Altamont.

Top Five Games to Watch

No. 1 Timpview at Salem Hills, Friday, 7 p.m., Game Night Live Game of the Week

The Timpview Thunderbirds have won seven state championships since 2004 and eight region titles during that span. Salem Hills, led by four-star recruit Porter Gustin, believe they have the team to challenge their Region 8 supremacy this season. The quarterback duel featuring Gustin and Britain Covey will be worth the price of admission alone.

Syracuse at Davis, Thursday, 7 p.m., KJZZ

Last year Davis went on the road and defeated Syracuse 21-7 on its way to an undefeated regular season and Region 1 title. Syracuse beat Davis in 2012, 28-14, and would eventually reach the 5A Championship game. Good things tend to happen to the winner of this matchup each year. It should once again have region title implications by the end of the season.

No. 5 East at No. 4 Woods Cross, Friday, 7 p.m.

East may have a worthy challenger in Region 6. Woods Cross enters this game 3-0 and ranked fourth in 4A after reaching the semifinals last season. The Wildcats have a chance to make a statement Friday against the visiting Leopards. East is 1-2 but against a brutal schedule featuring Jordan and Valor Christian, Colorado, that may have prepared them well for any challenge in region play.

No. 3 Cedar at No. 1 Desert Hills, Friday, 7 p.m.

It’s no surprise Desert Hills is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in 3AA. The fact Cedar is undefeated and ranked No. 3 is a surprise. Cedar is coming off a 17-7 road win over 4A Skyline and could make a huge statement in Region 9 with a road win against the defending champs.

No. 1 South Summit at No. 4 Beaver, Friday, 7 p.m.

This will be an early season test for both of these 2A contenders. Beaver can prove that it can compete with the defending state champions. South Summit can prove that it can answer the challenge after a long bus ride. This could also be a potential semifinal matchup in the 2A playoffs.
