OGDEN — LDS Church leaders gave a media tour of the newly renovated Ogden temple in advance of the public open house, which begins later this week.

The renovation project included a completely new exterior and interior, with the only sections remaining are the foundation and the walls.

The Ogden temple was finished in 1972 but closed three years ago for the major renovation, which included strengthening the structure to withstand an earthquake.

The new design is more of a modern and timeless look, said Kent Richards, executive director of the temple department for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The interior is decorated with wood imported from Africa and marble from Egypt.

The entrance was moved to Washington Blvd., and the building has upgraded heating and cooling systems that are more energy-efficient.

The grounds of the temple also has new landscaping, which church leaders said they believe is a beautiful addition to the community.

The online reservation system for the public tours is full, but church officials announced Monday morning they have added additional reservation times.

The public open house begins on Friday, Aug. 1, and continues through Sept. 6. The temple is scheduled to be rededicated on Sunday, Sept. 21.
