SALT LAKE CITY — Since 1924, more than 2,500 medals have been handed out to victors of their winter sport. In February, approximately 250 more medals will be awarded to athletes in Sochi, Russia.
Every Olympic Games, event coverage is interspersed with medal counts. And with each of the games, the all-time number of medals for each country ticks upward. Excluding revoked medals, 2,569 – encompassing bronze, silver and gold – have been awarded internationally since 1924.
Currently, Norway holds the most medals in all three categories, with 107 gold, 106 silver and 90 bronze.
The United States is in second place, with 87 gold medals, 95 silvers and 71 medals. The now-defunct Soviet Union team held 87 gold medals as well, for a total of 217 medals. Russia holds 91 medals total.
