SALT LAKE CITY — Tyler Edwards was driving south on I-15 near 2100 South Thursday morning when all the cars in front of him started braking and a huge ram came rambling up the HOV lane.
"Look up, and there's this sheep," Edwards said. "Not just a little sheep, it's a big sheep, probably about the size of a great Dane, just walking up the middle of the cars."
Utah Highway Patrol trooper Michelle McLaughlin said the ram had a lot of wool and weighed probably around 250 pounds. She used her patrol car to trap the sheep against the wall and two other drivers ran over to help.
The ram tried to escape by jumping over the hood of McLaughlin's car, but they were able to pull him down and lay him on his side.
"Just basically hog-tied him, just like you do in the rodeo," McLaughlin said. "The nice lady with a leash, she ran over and got a blanket we put over the top of him to calm him down."
The owners that lost the sheep drove back around on the freeway and helped him back into their trailer. The ram escaped when the back door of the trailer broke and bounced open.
Edwards came away with an interesting story and says he is glad the sheep didn't get hurt.
"You don't see that every day, especially a sheep that size," Edwards said.
