COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A convicted car burglar was arrested Monday after police say he may have been doing the same thing in three counties.
Corey Trujillo, 25, of West Valley City, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and drug possession.
About 3 p.m. Sunday, a Subaru Outback was stolen from the parking lot of the Pinnacle Highland Apartments, 7673 S. Highland Drive. Investigators believe the thief used a shaved key to get into the vehicle and start it, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Gary Young.
About midnight that night, police found the vehicle at the Santa Fe Apartments, 1495 E. Fort Union Blvd., after receiving a call of a suspicious vehicle in the area. Police found the driver apparently casing out vehicles, Young said. In the back of the stolen Subaru, officers found a backpack with many items that were determined to be stolen in other burglaries from Springville to Cottonwood Heights, he said.
Some of those items included laptops, multiple driver's licenses, insurance cards, check stubs and even school IDs, Young said. As of Monday morning, detectives had identified 29 potential victims from three counties based on the evidence.
A passenger who was with Trujillo was not arrested, but Young said possible charges were pending.
Trujillo was convicted of theft and drug possession in 2012 and successfully completed probation in September. According to charging documents, Trujillo was arrested in that case for the same thing he was arrested for Monday. Prosecutors say he stole a vehicle using a shaved key. When he was arrested, investigators found a backpack with stolen credit cards, a wallet, a student ID, an insurance card, a Social Security card, a Playstation 3 and meth. Police also found a "lock pick kit," bolt cutters and a window punch, according to the charges.
