CEDAR CITY — A man who police say was "repeatedly kicked and stomped" remained hospitalized Thursday in critical condition.
Bryan Mahue Mellor, 59, remained "on life support systems" at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, according to Cedar City police.
Just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, Cedar City police were called to the area of 470 South and 75 West on an assault in progress. They arrived to find Mellor on the sidewalk with traumatic injuries.
Brandon Thomas Sappington, 30, of Cedar City, was arrested for investigation of attempted murder, assault on a police officer, interfering with an arrest and a misdemeanor traffic warrant.
The two were reportedly acquaintances, but a motive for the attack remained unknown Thursday, according to police.
A check of state court records shows that outside of traffic citations, Sappington has no criminal history in Utah.
