OGDEN — Police have arrested a woman for investigation of arson. But investigators say she is not involved in the string of field fires known as the Parkway Fires.
Janell Spradling, 27, was arrested this week for investigation of aggravated arson and charged Wednesday in 2nd District Court with the same crime, a first-degree felony.
Ogden Police Lt. Danielle Croyle said Spradling intentionally set fire to a vacant duplex, 2507 D Ave., on Monday. No one was injured in the blaze, which caused about $25,000 damage.
Since Aug. 12, there have also been 11 fires started by arson near the Ogden Parkway Trail system.
Although Spradling is not believed to be connected to those fires, investigators working those cases received tips that led them to her after the apartment fire.
Croyle declined to give a possible motive Wednesday for that fire.
"She did disclose that she intentionally set it. She does not reside there, and she intentionally started it," she said.
Detectives do not believe the fires were set as a copycat to the grass fires. As of Wednesday, Croyle said there were no new leads in the grass fires investigation.
In February, Spradling was convicted of misdemeanor disorderly conduct in 2nd District Court, according to state court records. In 2010, she was convicted of misdemeanor theft by receiving stolen property. She has had other misdemeanor charges and eviction notices filed against her over the past 10 years, according to court records.
