SALT LAKE CITY — Environmental groups in the Salt Lake Valley are urging UDOT to examine how a proposed highway could affect wildlife along the Great Salt Lake.
The environmentalist volunteers are spending dozens of hours logging and counting specific birds in Davis County's wetlands, and they want to show UDOT how the habitats will be affected by the new highway.
Members of the Nature Conservancy Board said that the proposed West Davis Corridor would destroy habitats for a variety of birds that nest in Utah during migration season.
"It has an incredible impact on you to see that many birds in one place, knowing that this is their only stopover between Canada and South America," said Nature Conservancy Board member Maunsel Pearce.
The Nature Conservancy said it isn't asking UDOT to halt plans for the new highway, but to pay close attention to the potential environmental impact.
UDOT is currently taking public comments on its preferred route for the West Davis Corridor.
