SALT LAKE CITY — A football game was cut short Friday night after a small electrical fire caused a power outage at the East High football stadium.

Players and fans were asked to evacuate the scene when it was reported at 8:40 p.m. that smoke was coming from an electrical shed just off the football field and that the power had gone out, according to Jasen Asay with the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

"We decided as a safety precaution that we needed to evacuate the stadium," Asay said. "We had the power shut off to the entire school, and had crews out to electrical shed to take care of a small fire on the electrical box."

Asay said once the fire was extinguished, the scene was turned back over to East High officials. School officials had originally planned on restarting the game at 10 a.m. Saturday, but Asay said it was determined that "it would not be a good idea."

The game was being played between East and Jordan high schools — the top two teams in the state — and the score was close: 28–27 with East in the lead with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
