SALT LAKE CITY — Two Utahns are rising stars in Hollywood because of their talents, but also because of the support of their parents.
Julianne Hough made waves on "Footloose" and will soon hit the big screen again in "Rock of Ages." Her brother, Derek Hough, lights up the dance floor every week on "Dancing With the Stars."
Their father, Bruce Hough, said it's not as easy as it looks.
"They were not only gifted, but they worked extraordinarily hard," he said. "They put in hours, and hours and hours. There are many gifted people, who without work and application of those gifts, get passed up by people who work very hard."
Hough said raising passionate kids involves providing opportunities, guiding them and supporting them once they find something they love.
Other parents agree. The father of Mark Zuckerburg — founder of Facebook — said he always nurtured his son's interest in technology and computers.
He said last year in a radio interview that an early exposure to computers inspired his son's interest in technology, and he encouraged parents to support their children's strengths and passions with a balance of "work and play."
