WEST JORDAN — Construction on the Mountain View Corridor is one-third complete.

And for Teri Newell, that's reason to celebrate.

"When you're in the planning phase, trying to resolve all the issues, address people's concerns, it's hard to believe when you get to this point," said Newell, the Utah Department of Transportation's project manager for the future highway.

By the end of 2012, UDOT officials say the Mountain View Corridor will provide a travel alternative for motorists, connecting Lehi in Utah County with 5400 South in Salt Lake County.

At first, it will be two lanes in each direction, with stop lights at some intersections. In the future, UDOT officials say traffic will flow on a full freeway without stop lights from Lehi to I-80.

"We've seen a huge growth in population on the west side of the valley," Newell said. "It's one of the largest growing areas. … This will help serve them now and well into the future."

Construction on the Mountain View Corridor in Salt Lake County began last summer. The 15-mile segment between 5400 South and Redwood Road is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.

In Utah County, construction has been under way on a three-mile stretch of highway on 2100 North between Redwood Road and I-15. That work is expected to be complete this fall.
