SALT LAKE CITY — Rumors that Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, may join Fox News were furthered by reports that the Republican congressman has spoken to his colleagues about taking a "substantial role" with the news channel.

On Saturday, the Washingtonian, a monthly magazine distributed in the Washington, D.C., area, repeated the rumors that Chaffetz was eyeing a position with Fox as an on-air talent after his abrupt decision not to seek re-election in 2018.

The article cited anonymous statements from two GOP lawmakers and four senior House Republican aides, who corroborated the rumor that began in April after Chaffetz announced his decision not to run again.

On April 19, Chaffetz announced he would not seek re-election. The five-term representative from the 3rd Congressional District added further cause for speculation when he hinted at the possibility of not finishing his full term.

Last year Chaffetz expressed the desire to stay in Congress until 2020, when his term as chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee would expire.

The Washingtonian article reported that Chaffetz may move to Fox as early as July, adding to speculation that he will not complete his current term.

"When Jason told us he was headed to Fox, no one was surprised," a senior House aide reportedly said.

According to the Washingtonian's reporting, one close House Republican colleague said that Fox was Chaffetz's first choice when he began discussing his possible plans outside of Congress.

Calls to Cheffetz’s office were not returned Saturday night. Spokespeople for Fox News haven't offered any comments either.
