SALT LAKE CITY — Republican John Swallow will be elected as the next Utah attorney general. In his acceptance speech Tuesday night, he promised to keep fighting for state rights.
"I uphold the rights of our state" Swallow told the crowd at the Utah Republican election night headquarters, "to keep Utah sovereign and Washington, D.C., back on the other side of the Potomac and out of our pocketbooks."
Democratic candidate Dee Smith conceded the race shortly before Swallow's speech at 10:30 p.m. According to poll results available at the time, Swallow had 68 percent of the vote while Smith had 31 percent.
Libertarian candidate Andrew Mccullough had zero percent of the vote.
Current Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has served in the position for three terms. He opted not to run again this year.
