SALT LAKE CITY — The next time you take your son or daughter to a sporting event, don't underestimate the impact that experience can have on his or her life.
Steve Metcalf's father took him to his first Salt Lake Golden Eagles game in 1969. And 46 years later, Steve's son Garrett was selected in the NHL draft.
Garrett Metcalf was selected with the 179th overall pick by the Anaheim Ducks in June's draft, becoming the first Utah-born draftee since Dylan Olson in 2009.
Metcalf will play one more year in goal with the United States Hockey League's Madison Capitols, and then he'll attend the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. After working his way up through the Ducks' farm system, Metcalf could make his way into an NHL game — or at least an appearance with the Anaheim-affiliate Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL.
