SALT LAKE CITY -- Once a year, KSL Television has the privilege -- and the pleasure -- of donating time and resources to a cause we believe is very important to our community. Once again, this weekend, we will stage our annual Telethon on behalf of Primary Children's Medical Center.
The Telethon carries a message of hope to people who have found themselves in a time of distress, from a community moved by compassion and generosity.
Through the tremendous generosity of our audience, the hospital receives significant amounts of money to help provide care for those patients whose families cannot afford treatment. More than $14 million was spent on such charity care last year.
But it's really not about the money. The tender victims of disease and injury who arrive at the facility would be turned away under no circumstances. Many come with no real idea of why they are there. Some arrive frightened, all are vulnerable.
Each year, the Telethon offers an opportunity to hear individual stories of children who manage to summon the courage to persevere. We meet their families, and witness the torment of watching a child struggle. We highlight the incredibly talented hospital staff, whose calling offers no choice other than total commitment to their fragile patients.
But the most gratifying part of the event is realized when the telephones ring -- as people watching at home are moved to contribute a little, or a lot. The size of the donation isn't critical, because while a contribution carries a dollar amount, it also carries something money can't buy.
It carries a message of hope to people who have found themselves in a time of distress, from a community moved by compassion and generosity. It is a message that, every year, KSL is proud to deliver.
