WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has voted again to reauthorize the nation's only federally funded private school voucher program, which is open to students in the District of Columbia.
The bill approved Friday renews the program for another five years. It makes some minor changes to a similar bill passed in October.
The voucher program was a priority of then-House Speaker John Boehner, who became emotional while talking about it on the House floor last year. Boehner attended Catholic schools.
The bill provides $20 million in annual funding for scholarships for low-income District children to attend private and parochial schools.
Many Democrats oppose the program, but Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser supports it. The bill also authorizes federal funding for the District's public and charter schools.
