LAS VEGAS (AP) — A fire official in Las Vegas says firefighters rescued a 70-year-old homeless woman when rising rainwater washed her and her cat and a couch down a storm channel toward the Las Vegas Strip.
Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell says firefighters plucked the woman and cat from the drainage channel near Tropicana Avenue and Jones Boulevard as rain fell about 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Cassell says the woman declined medical treatment and the American Red Cross was helping her find a place to stay.
The chief says firefighters from nearby Station 22 also pooled funds to buy the woman some groceries and food for the cat, named Panther.
Cassell says firefighters also handled numerous calls Monday for cars stalled in deep water on roads, but no injuries were reported.
