ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An Albuquerque elementary school was under extra security Tuesday, a day after the school was abruptly put on lockdown as authorities searched a nearby neighborhood following reports of an active shooter.

The beefed-up security presence at Manzano Mesa Elementary School follows a tense afternoon that forced parents to wait for hours to pick up children.

The sudden lockdown was ordered after police received reports of a man with a rifle and handgun. Sandia National Laboratories and nearby businesses also were locked down for a nearly four-hour manhunt.

According to Albuquerque police, officers arrived to a scene in southeastern Albuquerque after receiving calls about armed subject acting suspiciously in the area.

Recordings of the 911 calls, released by police Tuesday, show panicked callers phoning in with pleas for help. "He's hiding behind a bunch of trees like he's being a sniper," one caller said.

One 911 caller said the gunman fired a shot at a brick wall outside the Emcore Corp.

"We hear shots right now," the caller said. "Oh my God. I don't know. I don't know. I hear shots...oh my God."

Another caller reported not hearing any shots but said the man was "hiding behind a tree and is now reloading his gun."

But officers did not hear any gunshots while at the scene, Albuquerque police spokesman Tanner Tixier said.

"Throughout the entire area search, 911 was receiving calls about possible sightings of this armed individual in the nearby neighborhoods," Tixier said.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made, Tixier said.

Detectives returned to the scene Tuesday to look for any new evidence, he said. So far, police have not found any shell casings or any impact marks from bullets, Tixier said.
